No striking is involved. Techniques are controlled and coach-supervised, classes run on padded mats, and coaches are age-band specialists trained to work with nervous first-timers. Safety (Risk Management) is the foundation the entire Gracie Barra teaching method is built on.
From age 3, in the Tiny Champions class (ages 3-4). Classes are age-banded through to Teens (13-15), then into the adult program.
No. The GB1 beginner curriculum is a structured 16-week path built for complete beginners, and fitness builds progressively as you train, it isn't a prerequisite.

Yes. The program teaches calm, controlled self-control and de-escalation, not aggression, and many parents report a visible confidence shift.
Coaches are trained beginner-specialists who work specifically with nervous, first-time students, and classes are structured to build belonging early (buddy pairing, a warm welcome, coaches learning names).
Yes. Gracie Barra Zetland runs dedicated women-only classes (GBF, Gracie Barra For Her) in a supportive environment, and women of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced belts, currently train at the academy. Women are also welcome in any mixed class.
Gracie Barra refers to the art as Jiu-Jitsu in its own communications. "BJJ" is understood and used informally, but the school's own language favours the full name.
Belts and stripes mark personal progress, not comparison to others. Adult progression is White to Blue (minimum 1 year), Blue to Purple (2 years), Purple to Brown (1.5 years), Brown to Black (1.5 years), with three stripes per belt along the way. Kids follow a 13-belt system with coloured stripes, roughly one stripe per month at consistent attendance (2 classes a week) and one belt per year after white.
Every class follows a consistent structure so students always know what to expect: a warm-up, a demonstration (shown whole, then broken into parts), guided partner practice, live training appropriate to level, and a close that connects the technique to a broader life lesson.
